209 Friday 15th- Sunday 17th March Chester Weekend
We headed back for our third stay at Chester Trafford YHA. We arrived in the early evening.
Simon noted the flowering cherry in blossom.
We were allocated Room S38
We had breakfast at the hostel then drove into the city centre and parked at the station. We caught the train to Shotton noting the unusual layout of the station.
We waited for a bus to Wepre Country Park but then decided to walk there instead which was a pleasant stroll. We had something to eat in the cafe there and chatted to the warden while waiting for the rain to stop but eventually decided to go for it anyway and eventually it eased off.
We filmed videos for both Wepre Country Park and Ewloe Castle which you can see here.
We had a late lunch at the Wetherspoons in Shotton. We were going to go on to Caegwrle Castle but time was against us. We also had to return to the pub to retrieve the gimbel tripod which had rolled out of my bag. When we got back to Chester , we went to the record shop.
We had our evening meal at the hostel. I was disappointed that the chicken and ham pie from last time was no longer on the menu.
We had our breakfast at the hostel and played a bit more pool before checking out. As always, Simon was sorry to leave.
We went to Mass in Chester then went for a walk around Little Barrow from the book " Pub Walks Around Cheshire". The pub at the starting point had shut down so we checked with a local resident that it was OK to park there. He said yes but also warned us that one of the paths was flooded.
The first part of the walk was a bit soggy through the fields but quite pleasant.
Simon climbed over a redundant stile.
The route took us through the pleasant village of Great Barrow with its restored water pump.
It also had an attractive church.
After that a lane led on to a gentle hill with good views over to Stanlow.
Not long after that, the route dropped down into a valley and an enclosed path . As the guy had said, this was completely waterlogged and made the last part of the walk very difficult. We escaped it at last and took a path uphill back to the closed pub. We stopped at Chester Services for a bite on the way home.
