214 Friday 19th to Sunday 21st April 2024 Lancaster weekend

 Our  next  weekend  away took  us  to  Lancaster. We  found  a  holiday  let  from  Booking.com


We  had  tea  before  setting  off  so  just  chilled  out  on  the  Friday  night.

On  Saturday, we  drove  to  Barbon  to  continue  the  next  stage  of  the  Westmorland  Heritage Walk. I  had  done  the  route  before  so  knew  it  was  more  challenging  than  the  previous  sections.

We  started  out  up  the  drive  to  Barbon  Manor  before the  path went  left.


The  pastoral scene  was  very  attractive.


Ahead loomed MIddleton Fell, the climbing  challenge  of  the  day.


We  were  soon  out  of  the  fields  and  heading  for  the  first peak of  Eskholme  Pike  up  a  steep pathless slope.


We  had  a  rest  at  the  rocky  top...


and  a  cuddle.

This  was  the  view  back  down  to  the  Lune  valley.


Eventually  we  reached  the  top of  Middleton Fell. Simon flaked  out.





The  trig  point  was  surprisingly  decorated.


There  was  a  good  view  over  Dentdale.



This  was  the  view  ahead  to  Sedbergh  and  the  Howgills


The  walk  along  the  north  ridge was  easy  but  seemed  to  go  on  forever  before  we  turned  left  and  descended  to  the  A685  at  Middleton. The  unavoidable road  walk  back  to  Barbon  was  a  tiring  trudge. We  popped  back  into  the  Barbon  Inn  for  a  quick  drin  and  saw  Chaos  again. We  drove  back  to  Lancaster. Simon  was  unable  to  arrange  a  delivery  order for  some  Chinese  so  I  walked  out  to  collect  it.

On  the  Sunday  morning we  went  to  Mass  at  Lancaster  Cathedral which  was  pretty  close  to  where  we  were  staying. We  were  a  bit  early  and  they  were  OK  with  us  taking  a  few  pictures.







After  that  we  drove  to  Borwick  Hall to  film  a  video.It  can be seen  here


After  that   we  had  a  bit  of  lunch  at  Booth's  in  Carnforth  before  heading  to  Morecambe  and  Happy  Mount Park. Simon made  a  friend  of  a  horse at  the  car  park.


We  then  filmed  a  video  of  the  Happy  Mount  Express.


We  then  had  a  game  of  crazy  golf. Simon  thought  one  of  the  other  players might  be  John  Lydon. The  guy  did  look  a  bit  similar  but  was  too  young. Simon  won  the  game.

We  then  drove  home.

 Simon  wanted  to  bring  Josh  along  for  his  trip. The  weather looked  a  bit  iffy  so  I  suggested  we  visit  the  Urbis  National Football Museum  in  Manchester.  Julie  came  with  us  on  this  one, a  visit  to  our  friends  in  Selside  using  the  new  Dalesrail  service  providing  direct  trains  between Bromley Cross and  Horton-in-Ribblesdale  on  a  Saturday. I  noted  the  crackle  of  branches  as  the  train  went  through  the  little-used  section  between Clitheroe  and  Hellifield. We  noted  the  Fat  Controller at  Settle  station. 240 Saturday 26th October 2024 Crewe Heritage Centre

 This  was  Simon's  choice  from  a  menu  I  drew  up  at  his  request. Naturally, we  went  down  to  Crewe  by  train. The  annoying  thing  about  the  Heritage  Centre  is  that  you  see  it  on  the  way  into  Crewe  station  and  then  realise  you've  got  a  bit  of  a  walk  to  get  back  to  it !   Of  coure  Simon  needed  a  rest  once  we  got  inside  the  Centre.
