218 Saturday 18 May 2024 Loughrigg Fell
This was my choice. I wanted to do a long trip because our Family Railcard was about to expire and due to Simon's age we had to switch to the less generous Two Together railcard.
I chose Loughrigg Fell for its proximity to Windermere and to allow Simon to notch up another Wainwright. We caught a train direct to windermere from Bolton. Towards the end of the journey we ended up playing cards with the guys sharing our table. From Windermere Station, we caught the open top bus to Ambleside.
We enjoyed the view over the lake to the Langdales.
We got our first sight of Loughrigg Fell looking over Waterhead.
Simon wanted to have lunch before the walk so we went to Cafe Altitude. The food was good but long in arriving. The proprietor apologised for being so busy which wasn't exactly the case !
Finally we started the walk, following Wainwright's route up from Ambleside. It starts through a park from which there was a good view of the Fairfield Horseshoe
We crossed the river Rothay on an old bridge.
Then followed a steep climb up a tarmac drive compensated by a fine view into the Rydal valley.
As we hit the ridge there was a view over Little Langdale to Wrynose Pass, Crinkle Crags and Bowfell.
After some ups and downs we caught sight of the summit.
This is the view to the Langdale Pikes from the summit.
This is the view over Elterwater to the Coniston range.
This is the view over Windermere. You should see Ingleborough in this direction but it was too hazy. Like us, the girl and her dog were on an extended break.
Simon wanted a picture against the Langdales.
Simon blocks the view northwards to Dunmail Raise.
This shows the start of our descent route into Grasmere.
The pointy fell in the background is Ill Bell.
Eventually we tore ourselves from the summit and took the steep and knobbly descent to Grasmere which slowed us up a bit. This is the view over Grasmere from about halfway down.
We came to the road at Red Bank and walked towards Grasmere. This is the view over to Seat Sandal.
We made a short detour to the lakeside before finishing the walk in Grasmere where we bought some water and ice cream. We had a short wait for another open top bus back to Windermere. Simon claimed the back seat.
We had tea at a Chinese restaurant before catching the train home. There were some noisy drunks on the train but thankfully they got off at Oxenholme.
