Clarke Chronicler's Resurrection

 This  was  my  choice, a  follow  up  to  a  walk  we  did  on  the  August  Bank  Holiday. The  idea  is  to  use  OS  maps  to  trek  a  route between  the  outlying  stations  in Greater  Mancheser. In  August  we  walked  from Bromley  Cross  to  Bury. The  next  stage  was  Bury  to  Littleborough. I  knew  we  didn't  have  enough  daylight  for  that  but  knew  it  crossed  a  number  of  bus  routes.  This  was  Simon's  choice  from  a  menu  I  drew  up  at  his  request. Naturally, we  went  down  to  Crewe  by  train. The  annoying  thing  about  the  Heritage  Centre  is  that  you  see  it  on  the  way  into  Crewe  station  and  then  realise  you've  got  a  bit  of  a  walk  to  get  back  to  it !   Of  coure  Simon  needed  a  rest  once  we  got  inside  the  Centre.  This  was  a  filming  trip  for  our  Country  Parks  series. The  footage  we  shot  can  be  seen  here. We  then  went  for  lunch  at  KFC. in  Leigh. After  that  we  headed  for  Rochdale's  game  at  home  to  Southend, along  the  A580  then  the  M60.  It  was  only  as  we  neared  the  ground  that  I  remembered  kick  off  wasn't  until 5.30 . We  therefore  went  to  the  Winstn  Churchill  pub  for  some  dessert  and  drinks.  This  was  Simon's  choice, a  visit  to  the  volunteer-run  museum  at  Clayton Hall in East Manchester.. We  caught  the  train to Manchester. I  wanted to  nip  into  the  bank  so  we  caught  the  Metrolink  from Market  St. We  passed  this  life  size statue  exhibit on  the  way. Clayton  Hall  has  its  own  tram  stop  so  we  found  it  without  too  much  trouble. As  usual, Simon  found  a chair  for  a  rest. A  feast  of  plastic  food  was  laid  out.  This  was  my  choice, a   walk  as  the  weather  forecast was good. We  drove  to  Todmorden   and  went  to  Mass  there.We  then  moved  the  car  to  the  station  car  park. We   had  breakfast  butties at  Todmorden Market  before  tackling  the  steepish  climb  past  the  Unitarian  church  and  its  graveyard. There  was  a  good  view  back  to  it  with  Whirlaw  Common  behind.  Simon  asked  me  to  do  a  menu  of  possible  trip  choices and  he  selected  a  visit  to  Williamson  Museum  and  Art  Gallery  at  Birkenhead. We  took  the  train, going  via  Wigan. This  is  a  pensive  Simon  at  Wigan North Western train station. Excepting  football  trips  to  Tranmere  Rovers, this  was my  first  visit   to  Birkenhead.
