241 Sunday 3rd November 2024 Walk : Bury to Norden

 This  was  my  choice, a  follow  up  to  a  walk  we  did  on  the  August  Bank  Holiday. The  idea  is  to  use  OS  maps  to  trek  a  route between  the  outlying  stations  in Greater  Mancheser. In  August  we  walked  from Bromley  Cross  to  Bury. The  next  stage  was  Bury  to  Littleborough. I  knew  we  didn't  have  enough  daylight  for  that  but  knew  it  crossed  a  number  of  bus  routes.

We  drove  to  Burrs Country  Park  to  start  the  walk. Simon  was  hungry  so  we  had  lunch  there. Just  after  we  had  got  past  the  station  we  heard  a  train  whistle  so  we  stopped  to  get  a  good  picture.


We  then  crossed  a  brook.


After  that  it  was  a  steep  climb  out  of  the  Irwell  Valley  to Limefield.  After  a  short  streth  of  road  walking we  climbed  up  out  of  Limefield  towards  the  M66 . There  was  a  wonderful  view  back  across  to  Holcombe  Tower.


We  crossed  the  motorway  and  headed  alongside  Wolmersley  Golf  Course  We  had  a  drink  stop  at  Birtle  then  climbed  a  lane  for  a  good  view  over  to  Knowl Hill and  Rochdale.


We  then  took  a  narrow , slightly  hairy  path  along  the  top  edge  of  Ashworth  Valley. We went  down  to  the  valley  bottom  but  went  badly  awry at  a  junction  and  started  going  back  on  ourselves  up  the  valley. After  some  confusion we  bumped  into  a  nice  lady  who  got  us  back  on  track and  we  finished  in  Norden, just  in  time  to  carch a  bus  into  Rochdale. We  took  one  on  to  Bury  then  finished  walking  back  to  the  car  in  the  dark.

 Having  got  the  bit  between  his  teeth, Simon  wanted to finish  the  towpath  with  the  final  section  into  Sowerby  Bridge.. 242 Sunday 10th November 2024 National Football Museum

 Simon  wanted  to  bring  Josh  along  for  his  trip. The  weather looked  a  bit  iffy  so  I  suggested  we  visit  the  Urbis  National Football Museum  in  Manchester. We  took  a  rail replacement  bus  into  Bolton and  picked  up  a  train  to  Manchester  there. We went  to Subway for  some  lunch  first We then  went  to  the  museum. 244 Sunday November 24th 2024 Stockport Record Fair

 There wasn't much doubt Simon would choose this option when I put it on the "menu" . We caught the train  to  Stockport , making the last  leg of the  journey on a Pendolino train. We  had  lunch at a Wetherspoon's before making our way  to the  record  fair  in  the  Guildhall. It  looked like a  failed mission but Simon found  something at the last minute. We  called in at  the  War  Memorial Art Gallery  which  was  on  the  way  back to  the  station. The  exhibit was  a  sries  of  townscapes  such  as  this  one  of  the  viaduct.
