254 Saturday 8th February 2025 Bridgewater Canal : Trafford Centre to Stretford

 For my next trip, I decided  to  carry on down the Bridgewater Canal.  Given the proximity of  the canal to numerous tram stops the  plan  was  to continue walking till 12 oclock then  return  to  the  Trafford Centre  for  lunch  before Rochdale's game  against Ebbsfleet. We drove to the Trafford Centre. Before  starting the walk we  had a look at some  drones in a shop but decided against purchase .We  needed  Google Earth to  relocate the canal. 

It  started with a long straight  section


  On  the  approach I thought these lined up  cranes  were some sort of strange sculpture


We soon reached the junction where a  side arm goes into Manchester city centre.


Not  long  afterwards  we  reached  Stretford Marina.


This  was  the  first  active  boat  since  we  started walking this  canal.


I  pointed  out  St  Anne's  Church where my father used to be organist and choirmaster.


As it  was approaching 12 o clock, we decided to end the walk at this bridge


We caught the tram back from Stretford.


We  had  to  change  at  Cornbrook to return to the Trafford Centre. We  had  lunch  at  Five  Guys - I wasn't very impressed - before making Rochdale in good  time  for  a  mind-numbing 0-0 draw at home to the rock bottom side.

 Simon  wanted  to  bring  Josh  along  for  his  trip. The  weather looked  a  bit  iffy  so  I  suggested  we  visit  the  Urbis  National Football Museum  in  Manchester.  Julie  came  with  us  on  this  one, a  visit  to  our  friends  in  Selside  using  the  new  Dalesrail  service  providing  direct  trains  between Bromley Cross and  Horton-in-Ribblesdale  on  a  Saturday. I  noted  the  crackle  of  branches  as  the  train  went  through  the  little-used  section  between Clitheroe  and  Hellifield. We  noted  the  Fat  Controller at  Settle  station. 224 Saturday 29th June 2024 Huddersfield Narrow Canal ; Marsden to Huddersfield

 This  was  my  choice, the  conclusion  to  our  walk  along  the  towpath  of  the  Huddersfield  Narrow  Canal. Though  it  was  raining hard, it  was  forecast  to  clear  up later  in  the  day ( which  it  did ). We  drove  to  Todmorden  for  a  train  to  Mirfield  which  was  delayed.  At  Mirfield  we  found  that  our  next  train  had  been  cancelled so  we  were  stuck  in  the  town for an  hour.
