266 Saturday 3 May 2025 Walk : Littleborough to Denshaw
This was my choice, a continuation of our walk between the Greater Manchester stations. Ostensibly we were walking to Greenfield although we were always likely to finish in Denshaw.
We caught the train to Littleborough where I saw my old friend Dave Grayson outside the local history centre and we had a quick chat. We then went to the Co-Op for some provisions.
We went up the Ealees Valley and on towards Whittaker where I pointed out the view towards Hollingworth Lake.
We went past the now derelict and crumbling St Hilda's Chapel and looked back to the lake and Knowl Hill
We dropped down to the road at Rakewood and proceeded up the Longden End valley under the M62 viaduct.
We made the rough passage out of the valley and across to the Piethorne valley. There was a good view across to Ogden Reservoir.
We had a brief stop by this old cellar of a ruined farm
We had our snack stop the woods by Piethorne Reservoir
We walked across the dam of tiny Hanging Lees Reservoir
Simon noticed smoke on the slopes of distant Winter Hill. He took a snap and contacted the local press who actually used his picture in their reporting.
This was the view back over Piethorne
We were dismayed to find our onward route blocked by a wire fence and we had to make a diversion to get down to Rooden Reservoir.
An unintentional deviation took us past the Ram's Head where we stopped for a drink.
We followed a bridleway down into Denshaw where we were just in time to catch a bus to Greenfield station where we then had a short wait for a replacement bus to Stalybridge and a train on into Manchester.
