308 Sunday 8th March 2026 Spies Lies and Deception exhibition (IWM North )

 This  was Simon's choice, a visit to an  exhibition about spies and counter-intelligence  at  the  Imperial War Museum North, Salford Quays.

Before taking the tram to the  Museum, we went  to  Riva  Blu  for lunch, The  video we filmed there can be seen here.


First we had to work out how to get across to the Museum from the tram stop.


We  identified the nearest bridge.



This was the view back to Media City and the Lowry.


We  watched  a  film  about  the  experience of World War One  in the trenches (not very enlightening) on  the  walls before going into the  exhibition.  Simon took a  quiz book from  the  nice  attendant  in  order  to  win  a  badge.

He  also  did  some  dressing  up.


This  is  some  sort  of  camouflage  suit.


I  learned about  the  role  of  the bellingcat website in identifying the culprits behind the Salisbury poisoning  and  may choose to become involved in the  future.

After the exhibition Simon claimed his badge and we went to the cafe for  some  refreshments.


Then we made our way home.

 Having  got  the  bit  between  his  teeth, Simon  wanted to finish  the  towpath  with  the  final  section  into  Sowerby  Bridge.. This  was  a  direct  repeat  of  a  trip  from  the  classic  era  in  January 1980.  We  drove  to  Hebden Bridge, stopping  at  Nutty's  Butty's  along  the  way. 286 Saturday 27th September 2025 Wycoller Country Park

 This  was my  choice although necessitated by our YouTube schedule. We  drove to Wycoller Country Park  and  the video we filmed can be seen here. After that, we walked a route from Paul Hannon's "Walks In Bronte Country" . This  took us past  the  rocky outcrop of Foster's Leap.  There was a good view over to Boulsworth Hill. Simon posed on the rocks. We passed the  sadly now closed and  converted Herder's Arms and walked along the road to Haworth  for  three quarters of a mile. A  track to the right dropped us  down  into  the valley and we made quick progress to the ancient bridge where we did some additional filming.  We  then passed the picnic site on the right. As the tea room in Wycoller has now closed we drove to a cafe in Trawden for lunch. Then we drove home.

287 Friday3rd to Sunday 5th October 2025 Runcorn weekend

 For  our  next weekend away, we chose the Campanile Hotel, Runcorn.  Warnings of a storm over the weekend overshadowed it. The  journey there was uneventful and we found the hotel without too much trouble. Simon had some chips and I had some ice cream in the restaurant before we turned in for the night.  In the morning the weather was pretty wild and we ran across to the main building for breakfast. After that we raced across to the station for a train to Chester. Ours was one of the few  trains still running. We  huddled in the waiting room until the last minute. By the time got to Chester, the weather had calmed down considerably and there were no delays to our train to Rhyl. We caught the bus to Rhuddlan but when we got to the castle it had been closed due to the weather conditions. this seemed like a disaster but I had noted the bus was going on to Denbigh.
