Clarke Chronicler's Resurrection

 I  needed  new  shoes  and  having  failed  to  find  any  in  Bolton, chose  a  trip  to  the  Trafford  Centre   which  might  have  a  bigger  selection. We  parked  in  Bolton  then  made  our  way  to  the  bus  station  for the  express bus  to  the  Trafford  Centre. We  went  to  Clark's  first  where  I  was  able  to  buy  some  new  trainers  but  not  shoes. We  then  went  on  the  ferris  wheel  outside, enjoying  the  views  from  our  little  capsule.  Simon  wanted  to  see  a  film  so  chose  a  trip  to  Manchester's  Vue  Cinema. The  film  we  chose  was   the  relatively  mild  horror  thriller  Prey  for  the  Devil. We  got  there  in  plenty  of  time  so  decided  to  visit  the  Little  Gem church. On  the  way  we  passed  a  building  site  where  Simon  spotted  some  interesting  detail  on  the  hoardings.  This  was  a  lousy  day  for  weather  so  we  chose  to  visit  the  museum  at  Portland  Basin. We  took  the  train  to  Manchester  and  then  one  to  Ashton  which  was  actually  a  replacement  bus. It  was  a  bit  of  a  walk  from  the  train  station  to  Portland  Basin. The  museum  is  in  an  old  canal  warehouse  by  the  basin, an  important  canal  junction  where  the  Ashton, Huddersfield  Narrow  and  Peak  Forest  Canals  meet  up.  This  trip  was  brought  forward  to  the  Monday  due  to  the  rail  strikes. We  caught  the  train  to  Manchester  where  I  paid  some  cheques  into  the  bank  before  we  took  the  Metrolink  to  Media  City  UK. We  crossed  the  bridge  over  to  the  museum. The  War  Museum  is  necessarily  sombre  and  dimly-lit  which  doesn't  lend  itself  to  photography. We  liked  the  poppy  memorial We  also  liked  the  tank  outside.  Simon  chose  a  walk  up  Pendle  Hill  for  his  next  trip. We  started  off  from  Sabden  where  we  went  to  Mass  first  in  a  nice  little  church.  There  were  already  some  Halloween decorations  up  in  the  village. There  was  a  good  view  of  the  Sabden  valley  as  we  gained  height. Simon  needed  a  few  rests  on  the  way  up. This  was  the  view  over  to  the  Bowland  fells.  For  our  next  weekend  away,  we  opted  for  Kendal  hostel  which  used  to  be  YHA  but  is  now  run  independently.   We  drove  through  some  horrendous  rainstorms  to  get  there hen had  a  bit  of  difficulty navigating  Kendal's  one-way system  to  park  up  nearby. Once  checked  in  we  went  round  to  the  Miles  Thompson pub  for  something  to  eat.
