 When  we  got  up, the  weather  was  good  enough  to  do  another  Paul  Hannon  walk. However  Simon  needed  a  new  blazer  for  school  which  entailed  a  trip  to  Whittakers. It  made  more  sense  then  to  carry  on  where  we  left  off  the  week  before. Unfortunately  Whittakers  have  adopted  a  pre-booking  policy  which  must  be  costing  them  hundreds  of  pounds in  lost  custom.  When  we  got  up,  the  weather  was  uncertain. Simon  didn't  fancy  getting  caught  out  in  the  open  on  a  Paul  Hannon  walk  and  wanted  a  compromise. I  suggested  a  woodland  or  towpath  walk  and  Simon  went  for  the  latter. I  offered  a  few  options  and  he  chose  Wigan. I  went  for  walking  towards  Liverpool  from  Wigan  for  two  reasons. The  first  that  it  would  be  easier  to  return  by  public  transport  as  the  canal  broadly  follows  the  same  route  as  the  railway  in  that  direction  while  there's  no  extant  railway...

 This  was  a  bit  of  a  disaster.  The  idea  was  to  do  another  walk  from  the  Paul  Hannon  book  after  a  visit  to  Spotland  to  buy  a  season  ticket  for  next  year.  Unfortunately  that  was  to  take  4  hours. The  problem  was  caused  by  two  things. One, the  club  unwisely  put  on  the  website  that  demand  might  exceed  supply. Two, the  club  had  prepared  a  seating  plan  based  on  who  they  thought  would  renew   and  then  abandoned  it  when  the  first  person  didn't  like  where  they'd  been  put.  I  always  intended  to  introduce  Simon  to  youth  hostelling  and  from  the  restricted  choice  available  chose  York  as  the  most  viable  option  for  a  long  weekend. The  surprise  element  was  that  my  wife  Julie, not  known  for  her  love  of   youth  hostels, chose  to  accompany  us.
