Clarke Chronicler's Resurrection

 Having  got  the  bit  between  his  teeth, Simon  wanted to finish  the  towpath  with  the  final  section  into  Sowerby  Bridge.. This  was  a  direct  repeat  of  a  trip  from  the  classic  era  in  January 1980.  We  drove  to  Hebden Bridge, stopping  at  Nutty's  Butty's  along  the  way. We  parked  at  Hebden  Bridge  station. We  picked  up  where  we  left  off , spotting  a  Beatles  fan  moored  up  there.   We  did  the  Mill's  Hill  to  Littleborough  stretch  during the Christmas  holidays  and  had  done  Littleborough  to  Todmorden  a  couple  of  years  earlier. Simon  wanted  to  get  on  with  the  next  stretch  so  we  drove  to  Todmorden.  I  told  Simon  there  used  to  be  a  curry  restaurant  by  the  side  of  the  canal  here which gave the  spot  a  wonderful  aroma.  The  final  trip  of  2023  was  a  visit  to  the  largest  town in Lancashire  that  I'd  never  previously  visited. This  was  specifically to  visit  Ormskirk  market  and  sample  some  Ormskirk  gingerbread for  our  All  The  Regional Foods  film  series.  The  weather  was  terrible  and  there  were  only  a  few  stalls  braving  the  wind  and  rain. A  guy  running  a  cheese  stall  confirmed  the  worst : the  gingerbread  stall  wasn't  there. We  retired  to  a  cafe  and  pondered  what  to  do  next.  THis  was  another  pre-football  outing. We  drove  to  Royton  and  then  filmed  the  next  par  of  the  Irk, The  footage  we  shot  is  included  in  this  video. We  then  returned  to  our  car  and  drove  to  Rochdale  for  lunch.WE  went  to  the  match, a  0-0 Bore  against  York  but  actually  the  start  of  a  good  run.

 After  another  hiatus  with illness  and  other  commitments, the  trips  resumed  with  a  trip  to  Manchester  for  the  Christmas  markets. The  weather  was  pretty  awful  so  we  used  the  Metrolink to  get  around  the  city  centre. Simon   found  his  way  to  the  Cannoli  stall . We  bought  one  each. Simon  really  enjoyed  his; I  thought  mine  was  a  bit  expensive  for  what  it  was. We  moved  past  a  hot  dog  stall We  went to St  Peter's  Square  where  the  Town  Hall  was  completely  covered  for  renovation. We  visited  HMV then  went  for  lunch  at  The...

 This  was  a  pre-football  trip  which  involved  filming  in  the  morning. We  drove  to  Tandle  Hill  Country  Park to  make  a  video  there. It  can  be  seen  here. We then  drove into  Royton to  find  the  source  of  the  river  Irk  and  begin  filming  another  video  series  on  the  river. The  footage  we  filmed can  be  seen  here.  Simon  had  been  off  school  so  wasn't  really  well  enough  for  a  proper  trip. He  did  feel  up  to going  for  a  curry  in  the  evening. There  was  a  rail  replacement bus service  which  we  took  to  Darwen. As  usual  I  had  Chicken  Dansak which  was  fine; I  think  Simon  was  a  bit  disappointed  with  his  Rogan Josh. At  the  end of  the  meal, they  gave  me  a  complimentary  glass of Baileys. The  combination  of  that  and  the  cold  as  we  waited  for  the  bus  made  me  feel  queasy  and  I  almost  thrrew  up on  the  way  home.
