Clarke Chronicler's Resurrection

This  was  the first  trip after  the first  easing  of  the  lockdown. As  garden  centres  were  now  open, I  chose  to  combine  a  walk  in  the  Todmorden  area  with  a visit  to  Gordon  Rigg's  in  Walsden.  I  took  along  Paul  Hannon's  Walks  in  Calderdale  and  let  Simon  choose  a  walk  from  those  around  Todmorden. Inevitably,  he  chose  the  shortest, a  4  mile  walk  along  Reddyshore  Scout  Gate, the  old  packhorse  track  connecting  Walsden  and  Littleborough. Simon  said  he  wanted  to  go  up  another   hill  for  his  choice  so  I  picked  Knowl  Hill  above  Rochdale. partly  because  I'd  never  climbed  it  before  and  partly  due  to  a  report  that  Bury's  KFC  was  open  for  drivethrough. My  choice  again  and  I  fancied  a  walk  around  Hoghton. I  found  a  leaflet  for  the  Beamer's  Trail  , a  6  mile  circular  from  Witton  Park, Blackburn  so  we  did  that. Witton   Park's  car  park  was  closed  but  we  found  a  large  car  park  behind  some  houses  nearby. Despite  the  closure  of  the  car  park, there  were  plenty  of  people  jogging  or  walking  their  dogs  in  the  park  although  none  of  the  facilities  were  open. Simon's  next  choice  was  Rivington  Pike. By  this  time  guidance  had  been  issued  that  meant  we  needn't  be  as  cloak  and  dagger  about  our  operations. My  choice  for  the  next  trip  was  to  climb  Winter  Hill  from  Belmont, a  walk  I'd  done  with  my  wife  some  years  earlier. I  was  apprehensive  that  the  car  park  near  to  the  "Blue  Lagoon"  might  be  blocked  off   but  it  wasn't  and  there  were  already  one  or  two  cars  there. I  studied  news  reports  carefully  during  the  week  to  get  an  idea  for  where  the  police  were  concentrating  their  efforts  in  policing  the  lockdown.  I  thought  we'd  be  alright  in  doing  a  walk  up   to   Peel  Tower  calling  at  Entwistle's  for  lunch  then  revisiting  Asda's  at  Rawtenstall . There  are  no  pictures  from  this  one  as  we  grappled  with  how  to  keep  the  trips  going  during  lockdown.
